Jaffe, Sara (2018) ‘Queer Time: The Alternative to “Adulting”,’ J-Stor Daily. Avail here: https://daily.jstor.org/queer-time-the-alternative-to-adulting/
I chose to read this article as the title appeals to me and I’m quite interested in the LGBT aspects.
The article talks about “queer time” that really means the terms of the idea that growing up is a fixed process. In most circumstances, people become adults at 20 or 30, however LGBTQ people can become adults at a different age. What really is “adulting”? What does “growing up” mean? What age is ideal for marriage, career, kids, etc.? This term can be used to describe how people act when they are growing up.
If buying a house is part of becoming an adult, does that mean that people who can’t buy a house aren’t adults? This is very controversial because many adults who work hard and have stable lives still can’t afford to buy a home. In an interview with 20- and 30-year-olds, a sociologist found that some of them think of the term adulting more in aspects of “overcoming an addiction or overcoming trauma” than in aspects of mainstream biases. Another sociologist says that there are five “life events” that are part of becoming an adult: education, work, financial independence, getting married, and starting a family. But these points are no longer relevant in the world we live in now. For example, it’s not the same for queer people not to be married or have kids. Even more, not all of these things are available to all social classes or even all people around the world. People also have different ideas about what is important in life. Queer is not the same as being thought up.
Because this topic is so current, the group found it interesting to think about it from various aspects. Everyone agreed that doing all five of the things mentioned above is difficult today. Divorce, singlehood, and bankruptcy are an odd definition of adulthood. Everybody can experience these. Experiencing these things doesn’t define you that you are no longer an adult. You are still an adult. We agreed that most people can’t buy a property today, especially in big cities like London. Nowadays, couples save money jointly to build a living. Singles have trouble finding housing. The housing market is overly traditional and conservative because landlords perceive married couples as ‘responsible’. This market still has to catch up to modern times and offer chances to everyone in society.
Lemon Group – Project Group
Our task after meeting the tutor were to:
Position these 4 components into a cohesive narrative, writing up:
- What is your model for the future not-for-profit social enterprise?
- What is the experience about for people who visit these spaces?
- What is the product? What audience will it serve? (e.g. providing access to people who do not have access).
- How will we visualise/demonstrate this?
Leveraging technologies, systems and organisations inspired by the present-day, but it doesn’t live in the now
: it is speculative.
→ How can we use our individual interviews to gather the information that we need for our project?
We have also completed the skill shring chart as a group. We shared our fantasy about the group proj, what skills we can contribute and what skills we are looking forward to learn from this unit and what we can’t/prefer not to do.
My fantasy about this project is to: To see the project come to life, to the extent of selling our ideas to an existing company.
A skill I can contribute to the team: Visualising, Branding and identity, VDO editing, Presentation slides
Skils Im looking forward to learn: Just being creative, using my full on imagination, Out of the box thinking
Things I prefers not to do: Public Speaking
With the upcoming Project Laboratory, my group worked together to figured out all the tasks to complete for
1. Monday with our tutor and
2.Project Laboratory next thursday the 9th
I was assigned to do the organisation branding and if I have time, I will do a customer experience story board of the product.

Your gloves also enable you to make friends through touch and send friend requests. Record the concert and do other things.
Interview Outcomes
I mailed some questions via linkedin to people who works in service, organisations and chartites. Such as at the South bank center, Oxfam etc. However people tend to not be online/ using Linkedin that much so I didnt get any replies. Therefore I went to interview some poeple at the south bank center with Pluem instead. We didnt find any staff that we could interview as everyone seem so busy and seem like they doesnt want to talk to us but we did find some people who visited the space and interviewed them.
Person 1: Charlie (Regional Manager at a company, Talent Acquisition Specialist)
1. Can you see yourself or organisations collaborate with AI in the future work environment and if so why?
Definitely. AI would be a key supporter in our people-centric organisation and consumer market. However, this would not mean a reliance on AI but rather as a efficiency tool to help reduce time and cost factors in delivering objectives
2. Can AI and technology bring communities together? If yes, how?
Yes .Depending on the data sets used. Imagine behaviour data and other useful areas that could be fully utilised and improve over time to match clear distinct data sets.
Think about language, love, preferences, hobbies etc.
3. Do you think new inventions like robots will affect your future in a negative or positive way and if so why? (Will it make it easier or harder?)
Positive way. Throughout human civilization, tools and machinery have been invented to accelerate and improve our way of life and working. If we think in the mediaeval context, wheels were viewed as “robotic” inventions as a wow factor back then. Machinery robotics would definitely be the next evolution
4. How do you imagine the future of work in general and also within your profession?
Creativity, human psychological capabilities (e.g sales and f2f contact) and critical thinking would become a scarce asset.
More would rely on AI and technology and forget the core elements of most human interaction and tapping into a more sincere and “real” realm of human engagement
Person 2: Billy (Serial Entrepreneur, Business Coach & Mentor)
1. Can you see yourself or organisations collaborate with AI in the future work environment and if so why?
Yes, we’re already doing so and will only become more.
2. Can AI and technology bring communities together? If yes, how?
Depends on the use case of the AI, but it can certainly free up much human time, allowing communities to focus on other things.
3. Do you think new inventions like robots will affect your future in a negative or positive way and if so why? (Will it make it easier or harder?)
Positive as long as they service, negative when abuse of power.
4. How do you imagine the future of work in general and also within your profession?
Same same
Person 3: Ben (Real estate Agent at Fieldhouse Residential: Fulham Estate Agents)
1. Can you see yourself or organisations collaborate with AI in the future work environment and if so why?
I think don’t we have a choice, because we are consumed by technology and AI everyday. It’s becoming a necessity, impacting our day by day lives even more than before.
2. Can AI and technology bring communities together? If yes, how?
Yes. Maybe in the possible future, Technology will bring different types of people from all around the world with the same interests together and create one whole big community. The government can utilise technology to help homes and communities in different areas with their safety.
3. Do you think new inventions like robots will affect your future in a negative or positive way and if so why? (Will it make it easier or harder?)
Both. Negative if we depend too much on it and if it breaks, we’ll be in big trouble.
4. How do you imagine the future of work in general and also within your profession?
life in the workspace would be easier with Ai, but it isn’t a good idea to totally rely or depend on it. My workspace specifically, could help save time and stress and could also be accommodating with budgets.
Person 4: Shylima (Graphic Designer and Design Educator)
1. Can you see yourself or organisations collaborate with AI in the future work environment and if so why?
Surely I can see my team organising our works with Ai, or even nowadays we use AI for creating or sharing reference design to find the number of possibilities for it. AI is quite nice on gathering information and do for all preface. However, on creative term, I think we as human can do much better than AI
2. Can AI and technology bring communities together? If yes, how?
Basically I think AI does it nowadays but in the form of Application. In my opinion AI still being just and assistant and primary base depends on our input and the number of input from HUMAN or Community
3. Do you think new inventions like robots will affect your future in a negative or positive way and if so why? (Will it make it easier or harder?)
Depending on what field, robots can create consciousness but still coming from the human’s input. Positive or Negative depends on the purpose of using it.
4. How do you imagine the future of work in general and also within your profession?
I do work in creative areas, as a Graphic Designer and Educator on Design, I think still way more on creative input, hardly that anything (in creative graphic design )can make much change. Creative work will be more demanding and customising more.
Person 5: Dale (Creative field of work)
1. Can you see yourself or organisations collaborate with AI in the future work environment and if so why?
I believe that we need to keep up with technology and not fear it, so yes, I and the organisation where I work will use it. However, an important consideration will involve the ethical use of it.
2. Can AI and technology bring communities together? If yes, how?
Yes, I believe the creative application of Ai and technology can benefit society and bring communities together. Young designers are one group that can develop creative projects to help achieve this.
3. Do you think new inventions like robots will affect your future in a negative or positive way and if so why? (Will it make it easier or harder?)
I believe there will be both positive and negative repercussions. Efficiency and time-saving robots will make some aspects of life easier and better. However, the loss of true human interaction may be of concern.
4. How do you imagine the future of work in general and also within your profession?
I imagine a future where more people work remotely and where there is less direct interaction among employees and customers. In education, the use of Ai may be beneficial in new approaches to teaching and learning. In the Arts field, the industry will likely find ways to incorporate this new technology in creative ways.
I have also conduct an online interview via voice call with a Programme Director at Mahidol University International College.
Person 6: Dynaya (PHD, University Lecturer)
1. Can you see yourself or organisations collaborate with AI in the future work environment and if so why?
The first and second question, the answer would be Yes, in fact we are planning to use it for, to creative sometype of online marketplace or platform for students as an exchange and open discussion and also as an platform for students to link and to join with others partner university and or private /local international companies or operational unit outside of the university to search for their thesis project topics and or searching for partnerships and sponsorships. To produce their thesis project
2. Can AI and technology bring communities together? If yes, how?
The answer to no. 2 is yes as well replying to question no. 1
3. Do you think new inventions like robots will affect your future in a negative or positive way and if so why? (Will it make it easier or harder?)
Yes, I think both. Theres disadvantage and advantages, threats and opportunities at the same time.
For example, Chat gpt (generative AI) – we allow students to use it but students need to be careful when using it. You can find it to be very useful if you use it in the way that you create something new. But still need to be careful with Plagiarism copyrighted and things like that as well
We found that it helps/ inspires/ boots students to foresee their projects, but it cannot be used for creativity. At the end students will have to make changes and make some alterations to create something new for the final outcome.
4. How do you imagine the future of work in general and also within your profession?
As a Educator, Ai and Technology is pretty new and challenging. We are working on it along the way, to see how we can use it to the best advantage of educators like us and also of the students.
We are also working rightnow on how to apply AI to Design education. So there’s a lot of room for us to work on this.
Writing task:
Experiment with speculative writing to describe the workspace you imagine, through working out your individual journey through it, while trying to make a change or accommodate a need
Work spaces would be fluid as we’re getting out of the industrial age, where robots will take over the manufacturing labour. Leaving us humans to have less labour. Fluidity in a workspace may relate to the regulations of work time as well as having regulations that support individuals with health and needs, for example recently, Spain became the first country to offer menstrual leave.
Fluidity in the location of a work space. Where there will be no assigned desks in an office. However, human behaviour prefers social interaction, so workspaces would be more catered to a mix between lifestyle and work. Everyone could decide whether to work from home, from a cafe, from a vacation or wherever suits them most each day. Where in a typical work week might have only a few hours of a (few) day where the team gets together and meets face to face for daily/weekly meetings.
